- Initiation / Improvement of Uterine Contraction (antepartum) to achieve vaginal delivery
- To product uterine contraction during the third stage of labor
- To control post partum bleeding & hemorrhage
- As adjunctive therapy in management of incomplete / inevitable abortion
Natural Contractility Promoter
- Promotes contractions by increasing intracellular calcium ions
- Exerts pressor & antidiuretic effect
- Quick onset of action (Response occurs within 1-6 min)
Also useful for :
- Induction of labor in special patients with Rh problems, diabetes, pre-eclampsia
- When membranes are prematurely ruptured for stimulation or reinforcement of labor
Oxytocin receptor concentration increases greatly during pregnancy in myometrium, reaching a maxium in early labor at term
Dosage :
- IM upto 10 I.U. stat at the time of delivery of placenta
- IV 10-40 I.U. To be added to the drip
